THE PROPOSED BAN ON MICROPLASTICS INFILL BY THE EU COMMISSION
On April 26, 2023, EU member states voted for a ban on the future sale of polymeric infills used within synthetic turf surfaces. The European Parliament and Council now have three months to adopt this regulation which will impose a ban on the sale of all polymeric infill after an eight-year transition period and will become mandatory across all EU member countries. This will therefore be a legal requirement, not only a norm.
A summary of what has been announced:
- The EU Commission announces a ban on all polymeric infill sales after an 8 year transition
- It will be forbidden to sell polymeric infill including SBR, EPDM, TPE
- Only organic infill / natural materials will be allowed
- The change in legislation will bring added challenges for field removal and maintenance
